Effectively Manage Electricity Use With Electric Meters
Every home, whether in urban or suburban environs, has a curious metal box on one side. All the power that this home consumes flows through this box, which is called a power meter. A power meter is used to measure the amount of electrical power the occupants of the home consume, usually on a monthly basis. The reading the gauge states is used by the power company to calculate how much the consumers of their product owe them at the end of each month.

Electricity is an indispensable component of the modern world, used for everything from refrigerators to computers. Without electricity, many people would find themselves roughly thrust back to the 19th century, before Thomas Edison lit up New York City with incandescent light bulbs. Such an indispensable energy supply must be carefully measured in order to be used correctly, and this is what meters do. The kilowatt meter and kilowatt hour meter are commonly used by companies for billing homes.

There are two types of power meters, analog and digital. Depending on how old the house is, the device used is typically analog. Analog in this context simply means mechanical, so the meter calculates the energy readout on the basis of mechanical components such as gears and clocks.

Even in older homes and therefore older meters, analog meters are extremely accurate. Sometimes, the meter needs to be repaired. Only a trained professional can repair an electric gauge safely. No consumer should ever attempt to repair a meter on their own: the risk of severe injury is too great.

An analog type consists of five dials of nine digits. Each of these dials has a pointer that is continually turning. To read this kind of meter, simply note the positions of the five pointers. This may seem tricky, but it is helpful to remember that each dial depends on the dial to the immediate right. So, for example, if one dial is between two numbers, look at the dial to the right.

If that dial is not yet past zero, use the smaller of the two numbers the dial on the left is between. If the dial has passed zero, use the larger of the two numbers. Reading a digital power meter is different; instead of five dials, there is a simple digital readout stating the amount of energy used to date. Using the previous month’s data, the electric company can calculate the amount the consumers owe.

Reading electric meters are easy if the proper technique is known. Electric meters help customers and providers manage electricity use more effectively.
